Introducing Orion

Image
Today, the platform our team has been building for more than a year and a half finally has a name... Orion! When I joined Precision eControl as Head of Product and Engineering at the end of July 2024, one of the first problems I was asked to solve was building a new price monitoring application to monitor the web and better support MAP administrators. As we spent time understanding our customers, existing products, technology, and where we wanted to go, it became clear that we had an opportunity to think bigger than a single application. We decided to build a new platform on a new technology stack and build the team that could bring that vision to life. While we're 100% remote, we intentionally built most of the engineering team here in the Columbus area. Being in the same time zone as most of our customers makes it easier for engineers to join customer calls, hear problems firsthand, and stay closer to the people using what they're building. We also wanted the benefits of work...

Back to Gilwell: Rediscovering What Scouting Taught Me

Image
This past weekend, I completed the first of my two Wood Badge weekends, Scouting America’s premier leadership training for adults. Before signing up, I honestly didn’t know much about Wood Badge. I knew my mom had completed it many years ago, that she was a Buffalo, and, according to her, the Buffaloes were the best. So there was something extra special about following in her footsteps and experiencing a Scouting tradition that had been part of her own Scouting journey. As I’ve gotten back into Scouting over the past few years, I’ve begun to see how much Scouting taught me without realizing it as a youth. Wood Badge reinforced that for me. Scouting and Leadership Throughout the weekend, we worked with leadership concepts that I’ve used throughout my professional career. We spent time on Tuckman’s Stages of Team Development: Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing. We explored DISC and how different communication and behavioral styles affect the way people work together. We also spen...

Book Club Templates for Teams and Communities of Practice

Image
As a product leader and infinite learner, I've discovered that learning is not just reading a book (10%) but also learning from others (20%) and implementing those insights (70%). Reading a book together allows you to read, learn from each other, and be accountable for applying what you have learned. This can help upskill the whole team or community of practice (CoP) and establish a common vernacular. Here are some recommendations for starting a book club with your team or community of practice.

Mosyle App Management Recently, I had to reinstall everything on my Mac after IT installed Mosyle to manage our Macs at work. As a result, I had to start from scratch and install all of my preferred apps and customize my settings again. To make the process smoother in the future, I documented the steps I took, including the apps I installed and the customizations I made. In sharing my process, I hope it can help others who may also need to reinstall everything on their Mac.
